I worked in London during the 70’s for a passenger lift company and at the time I thought computers were just large boxes that stored data for the accounts and stock control departments but how wrong could I be.

In the corner of the cold computer room was a portable computer, a Commodore PET and it weighed a ton.

The computer department manager agreed to let me use it, firstly during lunch breaks and then, after some time, I could take it home after work and at weekends.

I was hooked when a Polish colleague explained the “if-then-else” and the “for i=1 to 10” statements, before then I didn’t have a clue what a computer program was or what a program could do.
